Operation Blessing Welcomes Donations to Help Parola Fire Survivors

While others were sleeping soundly inside their homes at daybreak of February 21, the residents of Parola Compound, in Tondo, Manila woke up to their homes on fire.

Some did not even have the chance to sleep at all as they felt helpless watching the blaze engulf their homes, for possibly the longest 6 hours of their lives. One of them is Mylene Arpon.

“We have nothing,” lamented Mylene when asked about how they are holding up after the huge fire that razed their home in Parola.

Because many of the houses were made of light materials, their entire compound nearly burned to the ground. Mylene’s family is one of the hundreds who were left homeless amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our house went up in flames. We have no source of income. We are just relying on what we can get from the government and other organizations,” Mylene shared, worried about where they will get their next meal.

Her family and other fire survivors temporarily sought shelter at the Jose Abad Santos High School.

That is why it was a huge relief for Mylene when Operation Blessing visited their temporary shelter and brought immediate relief.

Through the support of partners and the 7th Civil Relations Group CRSAFP, Operation Blessing provided much-needed food items and hygiene kits to the affected families. Thealso received prayers and words of encouragement from the team.

While the survivors are grateful for the help they received, there is still a lot to be done to help them get back on their feet.

Our kababayans are wondering how they can rebuild their lives amid trauma, uncertainty, and fear of the pandemic.
