Rising from the Rubble – How the “Community of Hope” Sparks ‘Hope’ to its Livelihood Beneficiaries

5 years after the strongest typhoon to ever hit the country brought devastation to Tacloban, you might be wondering how the Yolanda survivors have rebuilt their lives.

To help the disaster-stricken start anew, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, has granted free permanent shelters to a hundred families in Palanog, Tacloban – the Community of Hope (COH).

Aside from homes to keep them safe and warm, COH residents also receive livelihood support and undergo livelihood training programs that could help them in supporting their families and improve their socio-economic condition.

The 32-year-old mother Nancy Ramos shared how the Massage Therapy training offered ‘relief’ and helped her find a job so she can raise her children. She completed her training last January through OB’s partnership with the Divine Word Hospital.

“I am very thankful that we’re given this opportunity. I am happy because I have a decent job. It helps me a lot in providing the needs of my six children,” said Nancy.

Despite the bitter memories, the survivors stood their ground and managed to make a ‘sweet’ yield out of their experience. Ginalyn Lonquias is a living proof that the storms they encounter in life make them stronger.

Ginalyn makes and sells moron, a local delicacy of Tacloban. The mother of 2 expressed that their new, safer place made it a lot easier for them to survive each day compared to their old nipa hut located near the coastline, a danger zone.

“Our life is better here [in the Community of Hope] because more people buy our product. It’s better here because we’re like brothers – when someone’s having a hard time, we would help each other. I thank God and OB because we’re all happy here,” shared Angelita.

More than the shelters and livelihood, OB reaches out to the beneficiaries through talking to them and praying for them.

The stories of Nancy and Ginalyn are just 2 of the lives that were changed because of your selfless and generous hearts. There is a lot more to be done and a lot more lives to be changed.
