5 Keys To Effective Parenting – Beyond Small Talk

Parenting is not an easy job.

It’s a constant challenge to balance work and quality time with your children. Disciplining, communicating, fostering independence to your kids, supervising technology use, feeling of not being good enough, become really difficult over time says Joshua Straub, Ph.D. in his article entitled You Are Not Alone—The Top 10 Parenting Struggles We Discovered From Over 700 Parents.

Parenting requires relentless amount of understanding, hard work, and patience. And there’s just too much on your plate.

So, here are the 5 tips to effective parenting.

  1. Make the Word of God a standard in raising your children.

“Seasons may change, but the Word of God will stand forever”, says the Word of God in Isaiah 40:8. There are a lot of parental advices especially in this Information Age, but then, God’s word is still what provides applicable and timely wisdom in raising godly children.

  1. Love the Word. Live the Word.

It’s not enough to know and read the Word. You have to set an example for your children. You should take time to learn, live, and model the Word of God because nothing can build up your child’s character better than God’s truths.

  1. Understand the seasons of your children.

Your children go through phases in their lives. Peter Kairuz explained that there’s a time where you discipline them with a rod (Proverbs 13:24) and a time to reason with them according to God’s Word.

There is also time to allow them to discover themselves. Just be sure to guide them through these phases.

  1. Do not pass your role on to others.

Don’t run from your responsibilities.

Fathers, your duty is to lead, direct, and point your children to their destiny. Mothers, you should care, nurture, and support them.

Don’t pass your roles to your helpers, relatives, or teachers.

  1. Spend time praying for your family.

Like Jesus who spent time praying to the Father (Hebrews 5:7), you also must make prayer time a priority. “Prayer is an act of humility and surrender to God’s sovereignty,” Christine Kairuz explained. Pray and stand on the Word of God because He is in control of everything

It says in Proverbs 22:6 NKJV, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Parenting may be a lot to take but God promises that He is able to make all grace abound to you (2 Corinthians 9:8). He will be your guide and greatest teacher (Psalm 32:8) as you train your children in godliness.
