Is Your Situation Hopeless

If you feel that the situation you face is hopeless, you may fall into a pit of depression that can even lead to suicide. After all, you reason, if there is no hope of change, why continue living?

That is why at Guidelines International Ministries we receive letters like this one from a lady who wrote, “On Saturday I was so depressed that I wanted to kill myself. This is not the first time, either.” Another, who struggles with an alcoholic father and a husband who abuses drugs and alcohol, wrote, “I have lost my hope.” A third said, “I have been going to church for over eight years, and I’ve backslidden to a point where I didn’t think I could ever receive grace in God’s eyes again. My sins were so great . . . that I often felt suicide was the only way [out].”

In the New Testament in the book of Romans the author, Paul, called God “the God of hope.” He wrote, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

Question: Do you know the God of hope, the one Paul was talking about? Or do you think of God as an angry Being who determines to beat the daylights out of all of us who mess up our lives?

A great Scottish preacher has well pointed out that the real profanity of man is not some swear words we use. The most profane word we use   . . . is the word “hopeless.” When you say a situation or a person is hopeless, you are slamming the door in the face of God.[1] I want to assure you that today if you are at the end of your rope, you can throw yourself on Him. No situation you face is beyond His help.
