What is Gratefulness?

gratefulness-gratitudeWhat is gratefulness? According to Dictionary.com, gratefulness is being warmly or deeply appreciative of kindness or benefits received. Gratitude was once described as “a habit of the heart.” Like love, it is a choice, and not just an emotion.

Grateful people are a joy to be around. Charles Spurgeon said, “It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.” People who radiate gratitude are the ones who notice simple pleasures in life. They count their blessings and acknowledge everything that they receive.

The Bible tells us to be grateful. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Why is it so important to be grateful? According to John MacArthur, “A thankful heart is one of the primary identifying characteristics of a believer. It stands in stark contrast to pride, selfishness, and worry. It helps fortify the believer’s trust in the Lord and his reliance to His provision, especially in the toughest times. No matter how rough the seas become, a believer’s heart is buoyed by constant praise and gratefulness to the Lord.” When we remember to be grateful, a change of heart is evident in us. When our heart is filled with gratitude and our minds are focused on God, our struggles lose their power over us.

Thankfulness is healthy and beneficialgratefulness for us. We must remember that God is in control, He sees the whole picture. When we have a spirit of gratefulness, we have peace that God is in control.

Gratefulness is a way of life and it should naturally flow from our hearts and mouths. So let us give praise and thanks to the Lord, for He is worthy! God is worthy of our thanksgiving. Psalms 9:1 says, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” Let us sing God’s praises every day, in the morning, afternoon and night. Let us never grow tired of being grateful.
