Giving Love Another Chance

By Sheena Ferrer, Writer, CBN Asia, Inc.

She tried drinking poison to get rid of the tiny life inside her womb. She hurt herself because she hated the thought that another baby will be added to their family. Another stomach to feed, another endless list of debts and headaches she couldn’t take. Yes, Shirly Dela Paz, a mom of four and a hardworking wife planned to abort her unborn child.

Roughly a year ago, Shirly, and her husband, Clement, thought the universe conspired just to make their life miserable – their business collapsed and their debts started piling up. They cried every night wondering where to get help and blamed each other for their misfortunes. And in front of them is another problem – whether to end the life of an unborn child or let it live in a world full of misery and deceit.

Then one night, when Clement was watching TV, he stumbled upon The 700 Club Asia’s story about a family experiencing an ordeal that’s similar to them. He turned the volume up and asked her wife to watch with him.

A life-changing line

“I knew at that time that The 700 Club host was referring to me,” Shirly said, “I can’t remember her name but I am sure that God used her to pray for us. We prayed with her and claimed that God can rescue us from the shipwreck that we were in.”

The couple wept and begged God to help them. Not knowing where to start, Clement found himself calling CBN Asia’s Prayer Center hotline for counseling.  Immediately after dialing, Clement found a temporary solution to their problem. They were prayed for and were referred to a church near them.

“That night, I already drank a bottle of Baygon (insecticide used for extermination and control of household pests) thinking that I can get rid of the growing life inside me. But when the doctor checked, the child seemed to have gotten stronger and healthier,” Shirly narrated, “Maybe God laid his hands on my baby and I am grateful that He did!” she exclaimed.

After watching a couple of episodes of The 700 Club Asia, Shirly learned that God can do anything to shun away one’s fears and even the most toxic poison and hate can’t do anything to stop Him.

Right now, the couple is already a regular member of a local church in Tondo, Manila where they are being discipled and groomed as responsible parents.  And they named their baby “Joshua Emmanuel.”

Renewed faith

At first, the couple still doubts the veracity of everything that the church was telling them. They didn’t see posters or anything that says they’re connected with The 700 Club Asia. Due to his spiritual background, Clement thought that the church leaders are just taking advantage of them. But after observing how the church members treated them, their perspective was changed.  “We didn’t feel like we’re strangers to them. They treated us as a part of their family and they accepted our flaws and taught us many beautiful things,” Clement said.

“Because of The 700 Club, CBN’s Prayer Center and the Manila Faith Assembly Church, we were able to redeem ourselves and say sorry to our kids. We thought it’s already too late to change, but they introduced us to a God who loves us unconditionally. A God who sacrificed His only Son to die for our sins,” Shirly added, “just thinking about it makes me cringe,” she said.

When asked about the most significant change that happened to them, the couple said, “Peace of mind.” They still have problems concerning their business and the challenges in raising five millennial kids, but God gives them enough peace to get through the day and say, “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”
