Great Food + Great God = One Amazing Business

By Deborah Ann Bataller, Junior Writer, CBN Asia

When Mary “Ricky” Resurrection-Puno started her food catering business in 1978, all she had in mind was her children and how much she wanted to spend more time with them while doing something that would supplement the family income. Little did she know that her passion for cooking was about to go a long way.

Blessed with four kids, Ricky used to work as a medical social worker at the Philippine General Hospital and the long hours of work took precious time away from her family.

Ricky said she was spending more hours in the hospital than in her own home. Though the feeling of being able to help sick people was very rewarding, it could not compensate her longing for her children. Finally, she decided to quit her job and focus on her kids.

But soon, reality began to sink in–the children are growing up and there are bills to pay. Her husband Isaac’s paycheck as clerk would not suffice.

“That time, I wanted to work and help my husband but at the same time, I also wanted to be with my children and take care of them. My children are my first priority and I thought that if I only I had my own business, I can have my own time for my kids,” Ricky said.

With some encouragement from a friend, Ricky decided to put up a small canteen inside a private school near their house in Fairview, Quezon City.

“I never thought of cooking as a stable source of income. I didn’t even see myself as a good cook even as my family and friends say so. For me, cooking was just a passion. I have always loved cooking for my family,” Ricky admitted.

After years of hard work and serving good food, Ricky’s small canteen grew into a successful catering business. Through word of mouth from her happy clients, Ricky’s business became a success.

In 1982, Mary Abigail Food Services Inc. was born . Ricky and Isaac named their business after Abigail, their third child and only daughter.

Ricky was enjoying the success of her catering business but soon realized that it also had its drawbacks.

“It was very time consuming. On the first 10 years of my business, I was only getting four hours of sleep a day. My hands were full as I had to do the driving, marketing, and inventory myself,” she recalled.

The bigger the business grew, the busier Ricky became.

“It came to a point when I was no longer attending church dahil sa sobrang dami ng clients, nag-catering na rin ako kahit Sunday. And so my husband and my children would go to church without me,” Ricky narrated.

It was then that the Lord put her to the test. Business slowed down and not long after, Ricky found the business in great deficit.

” I went through an episode na ang income, madaling maubos. Tapos, I was not getting paid sa isang malaking client na hinawakan ko dahil may utang din ako sa kanila worth P200,000. I was down and out and I wanted to give up the business. Wala ako mahingan ng tulong,” she confessed.

In her desperation, Ricky found a “business partner” who saved her from her great loss.

” I prayed to the Lord. I knew it was not His plan for me to give up the business. Sabi ko, kung bibigyan N’ya pa ako ng isa pang chance, Ikaw na Lord ang gagawin ko na business partner at magiging good steward na ako sa business at sa mga blessings na binigay N’ya sa akin. I also promised God that I will seek Him first,” Ricky said.

During her ordeal, Ricky also sought comfort and encouragement by regularly watching The 700 Club Asia and by constantly calling the CBN Asia Prayer Center. And despite her loss, Ricky still chose to give and support to The 700 Club Asia‘s ministry by sponsoring food during its live telethons.

“Now, I see to it that I reserve my Sundays for God. I am holding on to the promise in Matthew 6:33 that if I seek Him first, all the things that I need will be added unto me.”

And her “business partner” did not disappoint her. The miracle Ricky had been waiting for happened.

“Nang magsimula akong magbigay sa The 700 Club Asia at sa telethon, never kaming naubusan ng customers. Kahit hindi peak season, malakas pa rin ang business. Kahit na marami kaming competitors, overflowing pa rin ang nagpapa-cater. Madalas, parang magne-negative kami, pero kapag tinotal namin sa huli, sobra sobra pa kami,” an overjoyed Ricky testified.

She added: “Much more, when I started seeking God first and His Kingdom, the rewards were unimaginable. Unti-unti, nakabangon kami. Ngayon, wala na lahat ng utang namin, nakapagpatayo kami ng dream house namin, nakahanap ng magandang trabaho ang asawa ko and now, we are just enjoying the fruits of our labor. Napatunayan ko na I can never really outgive the Lord.”
