Sinners in the Hands of a Just God

In today’s world where God’s standards of holiness and morality are mocked and where people think so highly of themselves that they think they will be spared from His justice, it is far too easy to get lulled into that same smug arrogance

But this behavior is typical of mankind apart from God. We delude ourselves into thinking we are good enough, or not sinful enough, for God to send to hell for eternity. I know this is true, because I did it for years. I was smugly and sinfully arrogant for decades, pooh-poohing away the possibility of judgment by believing that God was “too nice” to send me to hell for my sins. I was certainly not alone in my delusions, and we proved it daily through our behavior.

But what we sinners fail to realize is that sin is sin in the eyes of God. There is no difference between “small” sins and “big” sins in the eyes of a holy God

The prophet Isaiah was in the presence of the Word in Isaiah 6 and he got a taste of what sin looks like from God’s perspective. His response?

Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.” Isaiah 6:5

That same prophet laid out for us our situation as sinners before a JUST God:

All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. No one calls on Your name, striving to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us and made us melt because of our iniquity.” Isaiah 64:6-7

Those are the words of a prophet who had been in the very throne room of God and seen Him for who He is. There is no man or woman alive who can stand in the presence of God and claim to be righteous enough or good enough. God doesn’t care how much we give to the poor, or how many acts of kindness we do, or even how many times a day we pray. We aren’t ever going to be good enough to meet His standards of holiness and goodness. If we could have bought our way to heaven through our good works, God would not have had to send His Son to die on a cross.

And that is why Jesus said:

16 “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

18 Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the One and Only Son of God.” (John 3)

Jesus also said, “Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” John 8:23-24

As you can see in Jesus’ words above, if you refuse to believe that Jesus is God’s only Son, and put your trust in Him as your Lord and your Savior, then you stand condemned. Your sentence will be eternity in hell with no hope of release. There is no buying your way out of hell. There are no “discounts” for good deeds done. It’s His way, or the highway… to hell

But take a second look at the first two verses of what Jesus said,

16 “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son…

17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”

God so loved the world that He GAVE us His Son. He gave us Jesus so that we wouldn’t be condemned to Hell, but granted eternal life through Him.

That was the whole point of sending one prophet after another with messages about the coming Messiah.

That was the whole point of giving those prophets more than 300 prophecies surrounding the birth, life, lineage, death and resurrection of the Messiah.

That was the whole point of Jesus’ miraculous birth to a virgin.

That was the whole point of accompanying that birth with signs and wonders in the heavens.

It all makes sense when you read the whole Bible with your heart open to what the Lord has to teach you. That is how you will get the whole picture that God prepared for us thousands of years ago.

Think about that: God prepared the way thousands of years ago just so you might hear His Message and receive His Son as your Savior.

That is how much He loves you.

That is how much He cares for you!

He didn’t create Hell so that He would have a place to send you

Instead, He created Paradise for you to live with Him there

And He sent you a Savior to get you there.

What other response is fitting for that kind of love than to worship and obey Him to your last breath?
