Preserving What God Has Wrought

By Dr. Harold J. Sala

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made.  Psalm 33:6

Global warming is a subject which is going to fill the pages of newspapers and periodicals for a long time to come.  It focuses on concern over our environment and how the ozone layers are being depleted.  I would not, for a moment, minimize the importance of preserving our environment.  Yet the “new research” we are reading about leads us to believe that a marvelous thing known as evolution has produced this remarkable environment surrounding planet earth!

Ponder this paragraph from magazine article which appeared in a leading news magazine:  “New research now suggests that climate shifts have played a key role in nearly every significant turning point in human evolution:  from the dawn of primates some 65 million years ago to human ancestors rising up to walk on two legs, from the prodigious expansion of the human brain to the rise of agriculture.”

While it is quite evident that changes in climate have affected vegetation and habit patterns of both humans and animals, it has yet to be demonstrated how evolution produced the complex environment necessary to sustain human life on planet earth.  For a moment, think with me about the fragile balance which is necessary for life as we know it today.

First–planet earth is 93 million miles from the sun, a precise distance to sustain life. If the earth were closer to the sun, we would burn up; further away, we would freeze.  Then, planet earth is surrounded with just the right combination of nitrogen and oxygen.  Our atmosphere is 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, and the other 1 percent is a combination of a dozen minor elements.  Spectrographs of light from other planets demonstrate that no where else in our universe does this combination just happen to be present.

Our moon is 229,000 miles away, rotating around our planet in an elliptical orbit approximately every 28 days, precisely the right distance to give us tides, aerating the oceans and providing oxygen for plankton, “which is the very foundation of the food chain of our world” says James Kennedy.  He continues: “Without the plankton, there would not be oxygen and man would not be able to live upon this earth.”

Some 40 miles above the earth is a layer of ozone which, if compressed, would be only a quarter of an inch thick.  The ozone layer filters out at least eight killer rays which are continually emitted from the sun, and, as scientists know, without that ozone layer we would be blinded and broiled in just hours, yet enough of the ultraviolet rays of the sun get through to kill most of the green algae which otherwise would fill the lakes, rivers, and eventually the oceans and would destroy human life.

Then there is the marvel of water, without which no life could survive.  Venus, for example, is covered with thick clouds which prevent life from existing, but planet earth has on an average only 50% of its surface covered by clouds.  There is the ongoing cycle of evaporation, rain and snow, which are brought to earth forming on tiny specks of dust or particles in the atmosphere in an unending cycle.

The more I know of planet earth and the remarkable balance of nature which is necessary to sustain life, the more convinced I am that this never “just happened!”  Recognizing the initial hand of God in creating our world explains very simply why man does pollute and destroy, while only God can create.

There is reason to be concerned about the deadly pollution that causes our eyes to sting and our lungs to burn.  God gave us a beautiful planet, and it’s up to us to preserve it, but let’s not kid ourselves thinking that it just happened.
