ILIGAN CITY — Everybody was scrambling for safety. The floodwaters were quickly rising and the current was strong. It was only a matter of seconds before the deadly waters submerged the house. Mario Hernani knew he had little time left to save his wife and daughter.
Acting on instinct and desperation, Mario knocked down a wall of their house. Instantly, floodwaters gushed out. He quickly brought his family to safety. They climbed a tree to escape the rushing water.
Once he was sure that his family was safe, Mario went back to their house to get their savings. Their house was already submerged so he dove to get inside. When he got to the spot where their money was hidden, he swam deeper. He was just an arm-length away from the money when a wooden foundation of their house fell on him, giving his forehead a gash.
How will Mario survive the onslaught of Sendong's violent floods? Continue reading HERE.
Luciana Magsayo was pregnant with her sixth child and was in her final week when tropical storm Sendong besieged Iligan City with floodwaters. She was dumbfounded when the muddy waters showed its might and rose madly, sending her and other families scampering for higher ground.
The winding path up the hilly side of the riverbank was the only place they could find safety. She could not explain how they made it to the top because during that time, the ground was very muddy, the rain was pouring hard, and the wind was very strong.
Luciana could still recall how they fought their way up. They saw how the houses disappearing in the raging flood water. The whole family thought that it was their final time together. Still, they drew strength from one another, each one determined to survive.
Six days after the flash flood, Luciana gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She delivered the baby in an evacuation center and named the baby “Cindy," a slight reference to “Sendong.”
