God’s Mercy Amidst Life’s Tragedy

DAVAO CITY — “Ang Diyos mayo man (God is good),” a line from a song exhorted by angelic voices of the children of NHA Bangkal. Who would have thought a tragic flood just wiped out almost everything from them and had almost cost them their very lives?

As Operation Blessing Davao immersed in their area, the eyes of each resident glimmered with hope, each with own stories to tell.

Jocelyn’s Hope

Jocelyn Janarin, a mother of six children, shared her memories of the flash flood last June. With her husband still at work as the flood came rushing by dawn, Jocelyn fought for the lives of her children. She struggled to cuddle each one of her kids as she brought them to a concrete house next door, amidst the strong water current and the darkness of the early dawn.

She lost track of her 14-year-old child, as well as her father-in-law. She feared they could have been taken away by the flood.

As her family shivered through the night from the cold terror of the scene, Jocelyn almost lost her hope.

As morning light brightened the surroundings, she stood speechless while seeing the remnants of what once they called home. But she lightened up as she found her missing child together with her father-in-law, alive amidst what had happened.

“Nag-ginaksanay nalang (We were just hugging each other),” Jocelyn said. She now understood the importance of life amidst losing their properties. She thanks Operation Blessing and the volunteer medical team for instilling hope in their hearts and lending a hand of help, knowing that hope shines the brightest when you are at your life’s darkest moments.

Saving Aljun

Venturing further into the community, Operation Blessing hurried to rescue a severely dehydrated nine-year-old Aljun Terig, who is lethargic and gasping for breath. Her mother is uncertain of what to do, but she is confident that the OB team would help them.

As volunteer doctors attended to the boy, close friends of the family shared the turmoil they went to during the flood. Aljun’s father struggled on his way home during the flood, only to be carried by the strong water current, but still hoping he could reach their house to save his family.

Indeed, he was needed as a father as he found his wife and children sleeping soundly while the flood was gradually destroying their surroundings.

Operation Blessing worked on continuing to preserve the lives of flood survivors by addressing their current health needs. Aljun was rushed to the hospital for urgent replacement of lost body fluids and further health treatment.
