A Simple Wish Granted

MUNTINLUPA CITY — Judy (not her real name) is a bubbly 12-year-old girl with a sunny smile. She’s from a poor village in Abra, and she loves to laugh and play with children her age. But behind her innocent smile and lighthearted disposition lies a lonely girl with a simple wish that appears to be very hard to reach.

Twelve years ago, Judy was separated from her father. He was charged with murder, which Judy’s twin sister and mother claim was all fabricated.

A year after her father’s arrest, Judy was saddened once more when her mother married another man and left. Since then, her paternal grandmother has been taking care of her, while her twin is with their maternal grandmother.

But unlike other abandoned kids, Judy still loves her father. She constantly longs for his presence. Every night, she wishes her father is there to put her to sleep, just like other kids with parents.

When she was about to turn eight, she was excited to visit and spend her birthday with her father. So it just devastated her when, on the day of her birthday, her father was transferred from the provincial jail to a maximum security cell in Muntinlupa to serve a life sentence. Her grandmother could still recall how devastated Judy was.

It was in 2008 when Judy last visited and saw her father. Two years later, the girl’s life took a drastic turn. On her 12th birthday, she was discovered to have fourth-stage brain cancer.

She underwent a series of operations in Manila, but as a result, her body was severely weakened that she could barely walk. Her grandmother tearfully describes her as “a baby learning how to walk.” She is transferred from one place to another with the help of a wheelchair.

They spent their Christmas in Child Haus, a halfway house for children in the provinces afflicted with cancer and other dreaded diseases. There, a team from The Edge Radio met Judy and her family. They asked her for her wish on Christmas. Instead of wishing for toys, clothes, or healing for her disease, she said only one simple wish: “I wish to see my father,” perhaps for one last time.

Last January, Operation Blessing helped The Edge Radio in making this simple wish come true. It was a beautiful daughter and father reunion. Judy and her father cried tears of joy as they hugged. Her face became even brighter.

“I haven’t seen my daughter in a very long time,” the father said with downcast, teary eyes. He was happy but at the same time lonely that his time with his daughter was only limited. Humbly, he gave his sincerest thanks.

For the first time in two years, Judy once again felt the warmth of a father’s hug, was carried on her father’s lap, and heard the heartbeat of her father’s heart. But more importantly, she found a father in Jesus, and she learned that He could make her seemingly impossible wish a reality.
