A Chance to Show Compassion

ISABELA — When a disaster happens, everyone has to be in “disaster mode.” All workers of Operation Blessing know this—whether volunteer or staff.

So when Federico “Kuya Eric” Carodan, an OB livelihood trainer, was called and told he will be sent to Isabela for disaster relief operations, he was not surprised. Isabela had been in the news. The latest typhoon then, typhoon Juan, had hit the province hard.

What met Kuya Eric and the OB team there was a really sorry sight: uprooted trees, twisted steel structures, roofless houses, and demolished buildings—proof of the strength of the typhoon.

When they assessed the situation, they knew they would have a lot to do. Children needed feeding, families needed shelter and medical attention, and houses had to be rebuilt. It would take more than a week to help all these people and make a lasting difference.

For Kuya Eric, the plight of one family stood out. Angelito Yadan and his wife Edna were from Barangay Lapogan. Their house had been flattened by the storm. Their five children were living in a temporary shanty with a sheet of plastic for a roof and blankets for walls.

The sight of the family’s living quarters was moving enough, but what got to Kuya Eric was the condition of the third child. Jennifer was 14-years-old and had polio. She was seated in a wheelchair without any proper clothes on. She was so thin and looked so frail.

Kuya Eric’s reaction was instant. He dug into his pocket for whatever amount of money he could find and handed it to Jennifer’s father. Then he turned away. He didn’t want them to see that he was in tears. When you do disaster relief work, he found out, it’s hard for you not to get involved.

He testifies: “I seldom allow myself to be affected this way, but I’m glad I had the chance to show compassion in my own small way. It’s a wonderful thing to know that I can be of use to share God’s love to people who seriously need it.”
