Abandoned But Not Forgotten

RODRIGUEZ, Rizal — The mood was already festive when the Operation Blessing van rolled into the grounds of Macabud Elementary School. The school had set up a stage and the children were already seated, some fresh from rehearsing their part in the Christmas program that was about to be held.

The entrance of the group from Sitio Licao-Licao made the event more colorful. They were the Dumagat tribal children from the daycare center—also recipients of OB’s long-term feeding program in Macabud. They were invited with their parents to take part in Operation Blessing’s Holiday of Hope and Cheers in the barangay.

Dressed in red finery, some of the Dumagat kids even had signs taped to their fronts—a hint of the skit that they were about to present later.

Two mothers from the group came forward to offer their thanks. Janice Impas, 25 years old, was particularly thankful for Operation Blessing’s Feeding the Children program. She says she doesn’t fear anymore that her child will be malnourished.

“It’s hard rearing my child alone,” she says. “I met his father while he was working in our area. We had a relationship for six months. When we found out I was pregnant, he left. He said he had been assigned to work in another area, but he never came back. I was saddened because I would be giving birth to a child without a father. I knew I made a mistake. My parents were angry at me. But I’m happy now because I look at my son Jay-M as a gift from God.”

Melda Perez, 29 years old, has two children. Nico is three years old while Rommel is a year old.

“My husband left me even though he knew I was pregnant with Rommel,” she says. “He went away to another town, where I later found out he had another woman. That hurt me so much, I cried hard. But what worried me more was that I didn’t know how I would raise my two kids. I don’t have a steady job. I have learned since then to put my trust in God. I pray daily that He help us through the day.”

Both Janice and Melda have been introduced to the Lord Jesus and now have a personal relationship with him. They also attend church regularly.

“Thank you for bringing the Holiday of Hope and Cheers program here,” Melda says. “It shows that God remembers us. Though our husbands have left us and our children, God hasn’t forgotten us. We’re happy that you’re here and that God is guiding you to bring help to us.”
