Touching an Orphan’s Heart

SAMAL ISLAND, Davao Del Norte — When Benjie’s parents died, he was left all alone. If not for his kindhearted neighbors who entrusted him to social services, and later on to an orphanage, he wouldn’t survive at all.

As he was growing up, and with no clear memories of his parents, he could only imagine what they looked like. It was a long time ago when he had the last glimpse of their faces. He was only three years old then.

Benjie is now 17 and in his fourth year in high school. Though an orphan, he considers himself very blessed to be living in Jireh Children’s Home in the Island Garden City of Samal.

“I’ve been an orphan for 14 years, yet I don’t know how it feels to be an orphan at all,” he said. “I’m grateful because I am here in Jireh. I found a family here. Even if they are not my biological family, they treat me no differently.”

He added, “I am happy to be here. I have gained a lot of friends, but most importantly, this is where I found my home and my family.”

When a team from Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) and Orphan’s Promise visited Jireh, smiles came forth from the children. Orphan’s Promise is a special ministry of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) in the United States created to minister to the physical, spiritual, and educational needs of parentless and vulnerable children by providing loving care, training for future independence, and the hope of the Gospel.

Jireh is one of the beneficiary institutions of Orphan’s Promise. As part of its goal to help orphans, they have committed to give the children’s home sacks of rice, salt, and toiletries every month. Through this ministry, the abandoned and defenseless can discover that God loves them and has a plan and a purpose for their young lives. In the Philippines, programs of Orphan’s Promise will be carried out through its partnership with Operation Blessing.

“We really believe that each child has a promise, because a lot of times these abandoned children, these orphans, even vulnerable children who have their families, they don’t know their value. And that’s one of the reasons why and how we do our programs. We want their hearts changed because they are valuable,” Orphan’s Promise Director of Operations Nataliya Khomyak said.

She added, “God created them in His image and we want them to know that He created them for a purpose, and we want to help for that purpose to come true, to help them develop their gifts and talents, so that they can fulfill their purpose. And that’s the promise that God has for each orphan. We all are orphans without God. He adopted us into His family and so we want to adopt these kids into God’s family.”

Orphan’s Promise also brought gifts for Benjie and his friends in the orphanage. They gave the kids donuts, candies, fruit juices, toothbrushes, and educational books that they can read.

“I never thought there are people who have big hearts to help orphans like me. I feel great, knowing that even though I don’t have my parents beside me, a lot of people are still mindful of our sake,” shared Benjie.

“We’re so happy they came here to see us. They made us feel more loved and special,” 12-year-old Pauline said. She became an orphan at a young age when her parents abandoned her and her brother.

“I miss my parents so much. I usually cry at night when I think of them. I long for them each day. I’m still hoping that one day, my brother and I will belong to a family again. That’s why I never stop praying to God. I thank Jireh for teaching us how to pray,” she said.

Orphans like Benjie and Pauline are being taken care of in Jireh. These young frail souls who were neglected, abused, and abandoned by their parents have found a new home. It is a place where all their basic needs are given—food, shelter, clothing, and education. Much more, they are also molded spiritually, introducing them to Jesus and how He loves children, even orphans. Jireh was a haven for kids, and Orphan’s Promise, with its big heart for the parentless, shares the burden in giving abandoned children hope, love, and appreciation.
