One Heart at a Time

RODRIGUEZ, Rizal — Who says it’s impossible to transform a poor community to a healthy one? Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) envisions seeing families and communities transformed by God’s love and truth.

“It may take a long walk, but it’s all worth the wait,” says Dr. Kim April Pascual, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Operation Blessing.

Every parent wants to see their children living a healthy life. But not everyone has the capacity to provide healthy food for them. Because of this, the Feeding the Children program was made—a partnership project of OB and Union Church of Manila (UCM) born out of their successful rice distribution program dubbed Feeding the Multitude last year.

It took hours of rough-road travel just to reach the children of San Isidro, Mascap, and Macabud in Montalban town (now Rodriguez) in Rizal. Around 1,200 kids are being fed simultaneously in these barangays.

“I can’t imagine how you discovered our place. But I know God has set your feet here because He has a purpose and He has a plan,” Linda, 45, told OB. “Free meals for my three kids are a lot of help. They don’t need to go home during their lunch break and walk an hour from their school!”

Teacher Grace of San Isidro Elementary School said absenteeism in her Grade 2 class is no longer a problem. “There’s an increase in attendance because every student is excited to go to school, knowing that delicious meals are waiting for them during lunch break,” she said.

“Thank you so much for giving us healthy food to eat,” said seven-year-old Elsie of Mascap Elementary School. “My mother and my friends told me I’m starting to gain weight!”

Volunteer mothers and church partners are also enjoying the task of preparing free lunches for the children every day.

“It’s a sacrifice with love,” Nanay Gloria said smiling. “It’s a delight for us to see these children growing with proper nourishment.”

Eloisa Eulalio, OB’s community transformation coordinator, said, “Our plan is to feed the children for 120 days to make sure they are properly nourished. Also, to impart values to them is our number one priority.”
Indeed, community transformation is possible by touching one heart at a time.
