Rosemarie is a six-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, but that didn’t stop her from finishing nursery.
She is one of this school year’s 45 beneficiary kids of Bless-A-Child, a project of Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) in Payatas, Quezon City.
Rosemarie is the youngest of Romel and Merlinda’s six children. Aside from selling retail salt and working part time in construction sites, they get their daily living from a sari-sari store entrusted to them by OB as part of its livelihood program.
During the recent graduation at Children of Hope Preschool, an overflowing joy is seen on Rosemarie’s face when she was awarded the Little Darling Princess of her class. Her feet and legs swayed in excitement while being carried by Merlinda, showing how happy she was to receive her award.
Despite her daughter’s condition, Merlinda didn’t abandon or give Rosemarie away when someone wanted to adopt her and bring her to America for medication.
“She is our life. She is not a burden. She is a blessing from God,” Merlinda happily asserts. “We feel like God’s winners because of the numerous blessings we receive from OB,” she adds, and those blessings include a new wheelchair for Rosemarie.
Merlinda is so grateful to Operation Blessing because of the great improvement not just in their finances but also in their family’s spiritual breakthrough which they continually experience.
Also moving up from nursery is Janna of Saint Nazaire School of Quezon City. She showed her determination and hard work with the several awards she received. She placed sixth on the honor roll, and was awarded Most Punctual and Most Improved.
Though Janna often goes to school with hardly a penny due to poverty, she managed to graduate this year with excellence.
“There are times when she will only drink water during breaks while her classmates buy food or eat their baon,” says Ruby, Janna’s mother. “She just endures her hunger, but she never complains.”
A single mom, Ruby has to support her four children on her own. Operation Blessing saw her great need and helped her start a small business in selling charcoal. Her daughter Janna was also enrolled in Bless-A-Child’s nutrition program so she can achieve her ideal weight.
Though Ruby and Janna have experienced a lot of problems, they still face the future with positivity.
“We believe that all these things happening in our lives are just challenges that God has given us,” Ruby says. “I know God is always there. He will never leave us.”
Operation Blessing has greatly improved the lot of Rosemarie, Janna, and their families through Bless-A-Child, a component of OB’s community transformation program in Payatas.
The program aims to uplift communities by providing free education and healthy meals to children, livelihood ventures and seminars to parents, and regular medical checkups to every beneficiary family.
Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines is the humanitarian arm of the Christian Broadcasting Network Asia, producer of the daily inspirational show The 700 Club Asia.
