A 24/7 Haven for Weary OFWs in Hong Kong

by Deb Bataller, CBN Asia

For the sake of their loved ones, our overseas Filipino workers went the extra mile.

With as many as 8.6 million documented by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, and possibly even more, OFW numbers continue to add up year after year.

In search of the proverbial greener pastures, many Filipinos have taken different jobs abroad for better pay. Domestic helpers, construction workers, caregivers, teachers, etc.—name it, they’ll grab it.

Dreams Turned Nightmares

In Hong Kong, close to 169,000 Filipinos continue to chase their dreams of a better life. However, many OFWs find themselves in unfortunate situations.

We’ve heard countless tales of overseas Pinoys battling sadness and homesickness. This is even more aggravated by the unkind treatment of some employers, physical abuse, verbal assaults, and, sometimes, even sexual violence.

These, sadly, pushes some of our poor kababayans to flee from Hong Kong without bringing anything home, except their painful experiences. Their dreams of greener pastures suddenly became nightmares.

At the CBN Asia Prayer Center in Manila, prayer counselors who are on standby 24/7 deal with these OFW nightmares on a regular basis.

“We receive international calls from OFWs in Hong Kong and their grievances. It is really difficult for them to live in a place where very few people understand them. And with their families and loved ones away from them, they have no one to turn to,” shares Pastor Salvador Bautista, head of the Prayer Center.

“That’s why it is important to reach out to our OFWs, communicate with them, and take care of them.”

Hello Hong Kong!

This is the reason why the CBN Asia Prayer Center recently launched its Hello Hong Kong hotline for OFWs who need prayers, emotional support, and sound advice.

OFWs in Hong Kong can call (852) 317-54377 free of charge, made possible through Hong Kong-based VOIP service provider Tawag Tipid. Now our kababayans can now receive encouragement and guidance without worrying about excessive fees from overseas calls.

This new hotline connects to the CBN Asia Prayer Center in Manila 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so they can easily call at their own convenient time.

Hello Hong Kong is the Prayer Center’s latest initiative to reach out to OFWs across the globe. The Center has been a refuge for distressed and homesick OFWs by providing a prayer and counseling network via email, chat, and social media.

With the new hotline, Filipinos in Hong Kong can now talk directly to prayer counselors, who are ready to listen like a fellow kababayan, offer Bible-based guidance for OFWs’ problems, and extend uplifting prayers even from thousands of miles away.

“The new hotline is indeed a great help for OFWs in Hong Kong,” says Pastor Bautista. “Even if they are miles apart from their families, they can find a friend who will be a listening ear for their troubles, and a shoulder for them to cry on, especially during times of distress.”

Pastor Bautista adds, “It is our goal in the CBN Asia Prayer Center to provide them with comfort, care, love, and, most importantly, prayers. We need to take care of our OFWs and that’s what we will do, beginning with Hong Kong.”

OFWs can call the Hello Hong Kong hotline at (852) 317-54377, open 24/7 and free of charge.
