A Different Course for TJ

A graduate of chemical engineering and a board passer, nothing seemed to stop TJ from reaching his dreams: to work in a good company, help his family, and live the good and comfortable life. TJ had everything planned at the back of his mind. He was only a few steps away from the life he always wanted.

He was an adopted child and his foster family has been good to him. They sent him to a good school and did not deprive him of all his rights. To repay them for their love, acceptance, and kindness, TJ excelled in his studies, took up a degree his foster mother wanted for him, and soon became a certified chemical engineer. What more could he ask for?

But when TJ became a Christian, he realized something was lacking. He began searching for answers. Little did he know everything was about to change because God has other plans for him.

In 2006, during a two-week mission trip in India, the answer came. For some unexplainable reason, TJ felt burdened seeing so many lost souls. “Lord, why am I feeling this way?” he questioned God. On his fourth day in India, TJ received a revelation.

“God told me that He is going to use me as a missionary, to share His love to others. I knew in my heart that I have the burden but I kept on denying it. What about my plans?” TJ said.

For three years, God did not stop calling TJ. Over and over, the voice is clear: “I have appointed you since birth. I have called you to be a missionary. I want to use you, my son.” Finally, TJ gave in.

“Okay, God, I surrender. Use me wherever you want to use me. I will follow You. I’m all Yours.”

With the help of a friend, TJ learned about Asian Center for Missions’ (ACM) intensive missionary training program and decided to enroll. Towards completing his six-month training, TJ felt he was more than ready. For his cross-cultural exposure trip, he went to Nepal, a nation that God placed in his heart. Upon witnessing the hunger for the Gospel in that place, his burden became heavier.

“It was very difficult because I had to surrender everything—my job, my plans, my dreams, and even my family’s expectations. They did not want me to leave and they could not understand my reason for leaving,” shared TJ.

“I was so torn because I felt like I had to choose between God and my family. But God reminded me that what I have given up is nothing to what He has given up for me. I decided to choose God and He did not fail me.”

Being a missionary was the biggest and toughest decision TJ has ever made. But for him, it was also the best choice.

“I thank God for using ACM in preparing me and equipping me. The training has really helped me in so many ways, and now that I was released in the mission field, I know I am ready.”

The field is ready for harvesting. God is calling out for more workers to be sent to every nation, tribe, and tongue.
