My God is Big!

It’s easy to give when there is abundance. But when the call to give comes in a time of lack, more often than not, a big question mark follows. For Chi and her family, it was a matter of faith, trust, and obedience.

One of the toughest battles they had to face as a family came in May 2008. Jeremiah, one of the children, began having excruciating knee pains. The doctors thought it was plain muscle pain since Jeremiah was fond of playing sports. But as time went by, the pain intensified.

Chi was starting to get worried for her son. When Jeremiah had an MRI, her fears were confirmed. The results showed a 2.5-centimeter-size tumor on his left knee. He was diagnosed with a rare bone disease known as osteosarcoma.

As a mother, Chi was devastated. She was hurting for her son. Her heart was breaking into pieces each time she hears her son crying helplessly in pain. The disease developed so fast that within three months, Jeremiah’s weight dropped evidently. They all witnessed how the tumor turned his normal knee into a big swelling ball of 14 inches in diameter.

In August 2008, Jeremiah had to be admitted for surgery. The sad news came: his leg had to be amputated, or else the cancer would spread. The doctor advised Chi that Jeremiah should undergo chemotherapy before such surgery can be performed, but she declined because it will be way too expensive.

Chi believed the Lord will work on their situation, and so they started looking for another doctor who would agree to do the surgery without the chemo. She was not only thinking about the expenses, but the added suffering for Jeremiah if he undergoes therapy. Being real estate brokers, Chi and her husband don’t have a permanent source of income, and they support not just one but five children.

One day, as Chi was watching The 700 Club Asia, God impressed in her heart to give. She was already a regular donor and supporter of CBN Asia and its Family of Ministries, but the thought of Jeremiah and his upcoming surgery bothered her.

“Lord, where shall we get the money?” Chi asked in her prayers. God answered her, much to her surprise.

“His words were clear. Trust and obey. ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6).’ I knew right there and then I just had to do what God wants me to do,” Chi recalled.

“I gave my monthly pledge as part of my commitment to God, even if I couldn’t see how things are going to work out.”

Chi agreed that Jeremiah undergo chemotherapy first. The procedure has six cycles costing P200,000 each. As a total, they would have to pay P1.2 million. They have no money as big as that. What they knew was that they have a big God. Chi held on to God’s promise.

Miraculously, when the oncologist sized up that they really could not afford the procedure, he relented and agreed to give the procedure for only P20,000 per cycle!

“We were totally amazed! We knew it was God who touched the heart of the oncologist. Because we obeyed God’s voice, He was faithful to keep His promises to us,” Chi said.

And the blessings continued to flow. After the amputation, Jeremiah received two prosthetic legs for free. One lady donated P450, 000 for his high-end prosthetic leg. He got another one from PGH as a donation.

Much more, the laboratory tests and X-rays revealed the cancer did not spread and there were no cancer nodules found above the knee where the huge tumor used to be.

Chi couldn’t help but be amazed. She saw that God is indeed the Great Provider and the Great Healer. He is the answer to all questions.

In a time of great need, Chi and her family learned all the more to surrender to God and just give. And in their obedience, God did not once fail to fill their cups—He even allowed it to overflow.
