Beyond Greener Pastures A domestic helper in Hong Kong is often portrayed as an overworked, mistreated, and lonely Filipina. But surely not all of them fit this picture. There are many like Helen Tabayan who saw a greater purpose to working “where the grass is greener.”
“Being an OFW is not easy,” admits Helen, who first came to Hong Kong 19 years ago. “You’re earning a lot but you’re a world away from your family.”
But it’s not just high pay that Helen discovered in Hong Kong. She came to know Jesus through the Filipino congregation of International Christian Assembly, a place where she can find genuine fellowship, love, joy, and peace, even when working all day has exhausted her. Helen’s life has never been the same since then.
“I thank God for bringing me here in Hong Kong, because if He didn’t, I don’t know if I’ll be able to know Him,” she says.
Now Helen no longer sees herself as a lowly house help. God has reshaped her purpose as an overseas worker and gave her a heart to be a witness for Christ in a foreign land.
Little by little, she is sowing God’s Word inside the home where she serves. She continually prays for her employers and the children she takes care of. She makes sure her acts of service glorify her one true Master.
Helen also boldly preaches in the streets of Hong Kong as a volunteer of ICA’s outreach ministry. She helps in reaching out to fellow OFWs and even other nationalities, telling them about who the world really needs right now: Jesus Christ.
“If only these people would know about the Lord and how much they need Him—only God, and not material things that easily fade. They only need Christ,” she says.
In 2008, Helen discovered The 700 Club Asia on Trinity Broadcasting Network while having dinner. Finally, she found a Filipino program that inspires, encourages, and acts as a source of refuge for forlorn OFWs.
Immensely moved by testimonies in the show and the lives changed through Operation Blessing, Helen began partnering with the CBN Asia Family of Ministries, believing she is blessed to be a blessing.
Soon enough, the seeds she sowed in faith blessed her with abundance. During times she ran short of money for her children’s college tuition, Helen would be surprised to receive unexpected bonuses from her employer as a reward for her hard work.
“I’ve seen how CBN Asia ministers to Filipinos back home, and through this many souls will be reached out for Christ,” says Helen. “With my pledge, I can be part of it even when I’m here in Hong Kong. We cannot do everything, but at least we can do something.”
