A Handicapped Woman’s Beautiful Feet ROXAS CITY, Capiz — The Civic Center was full of busy people that day, each one minding his own business. Some of the patients were trying out their new wheelchairs; others were just quietly seated while waiting for the next part of the program.
And there she was in a corner, giving her warm smile and words of encouragement to a differently-abled man seated beside her.
At first glance, she seems like one of the counselors, an ordinary woman sharing comfort to a needy person. But as one carefully looks at her, one will notice her weak and wobbling legs and her deformed feet, as she herself sits on her new wheelchair.
From Hurting to Hopeful
For 55 struggling years, Susan has been living the life of a cripple. When she was two, she became an early slave of polio, a disease that affected her mobility. As she was growing up, a lot of unresolved conflicts about her condition remained within her. And although her parents supported her, it took her some time before she had real acceptance of her disability.
“I had such low self-esteem back then. I did not want to accept that I am disabled, more so that I am not normal. I detested my weakness,” Susan recalled. It was when she came to know the Lord that she began to see things in a different light.
“The more I see God’s goodness in my life, the more I become thankful. There’s joy that sets me free from the worries of life. My joy is made complete in Christ. He taught me the real meaning of the word ‘blessed,’” she said.
“Now it’s my turn to share that joy to others. I believe that by sharing my testimony, they will also find hope in God.”
Never a Hindrance
When Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) conducted a wheelchair distribution program in Roxas City, Susan was indeed blessed to be one of the recipients. Her dilapidated wheelchair was finally replaced with a new one.
“This wheelchair is very comfortable. Before, I used crutches and an old wheelchair. It was really difficult moving around with those. I appreciate what OB is doing for people like me,” she gratefully said.
As soon as she sat on her new wheelchair, Susan did not waste a moment. She befriended the man beside her and spoke uplifting words to him. The man seemed comfortable and happy talking with someone who shared his sentiments. Then, they prayed together.
“I love to help. I have a heart for these people. My feet and legs may not be in perfect condition, but this does not mean that I can no longer help. These feet of mine are beautiful. My disability is not, and will never be, a hindrance,” she explained.
In the Bible, Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’”
