Despite growing up with an abusive father, Jun worked as a porter in a market to support his family. He worked abroad and realized his calling as a Pastor so he quitted his job to pioneer a church. Despite strict laws and various challenges, Jun continued in the ministry while  trusting God who blessed his efforts.

“I can’t contain my joy. But though I feel happy, it’s not about me, I still attribute everything to the Lord. I am just instrumental in His work,” Huwarang OFW 2017 Individual category winner Maria Shiela Cancino gives back the glory to God.

She saw how children in their community couldn’t go to school when he visited the Philippines once. After some time, she decided to open a foundation called Share a Secret, Spread a Success, which aims to provide spiritual, emotional, and financial support to deserving scholars.

“For years, we are the ones awarding people. Now, the Lord has rewarded us,” says Emelia ‘Tet’ Lim after being awarded as the Huwarang OFW 2017 for the family category, together with her husband Terrence.

Tet and Terrence endured the emotional and physical challenges in working as house cleaners in Milan to provide for their family. Through sweat and tears, the couple worked their way up to victory. From scrubbing toilets of different clients, they are now helping fellow OFWs by inspiring them and teaching them about financial literacy.

“Keep on dreaming and never limit yourself to explore and accept challenges. Start as early as possible. Always learn to give back,” Dan Lester Dabon,  who received the highest online votes through The 700 Club Asia Facebook page and CBN Asia website said. He was  given the People’s Choice Award and said that he is giving the cash prize to his scholars.

Dan has a children’s foundation in Davao and he usually conducts charity leagues where the proceeds go to children fighting cancer. He also has an online magazine show that talks about Filipinos living in Abu Dhabi that aims to inspire other OFWs and uplift the image of Filipinos in the said country.

Now on its 3rd year, the Huwarang OFW aims to recognize the hardships and sacrifices of the Overseas Filipino workers and honor their efforts in overcoming challenges while maintaining integrity, not only for their family but also to their community.

“We believe that our OFWs are catalysts for change. Huwarang OFW Awards that recognize triumphant OFWs not necessarily materially, but those who were able to keep their family intact while working abroad is very important,” said Luther Z. Calderon, President of KAMPI.
