Ramon, Achieving Dreams Despite Life’s Difficulties | Huwarang OFW 2017

Ramon Maluping

How can you strive in reaching your dreams when your circumstances keep pulling you down?

Ramon Maluping knew, and he pressed on.

After the death of his mother when he was 3, Ramon started to work at the age of 6 in order to help support his family. He would sell sweets in school, and then chicken and vegetables in the market.

Despite doing these “sidelines,” Ramon remained steadfast in achieving his dreams. He studied hard and took his education seriously.

His hard work paid off.

After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Philippines (UP) in Los Baños, opportunities that were way beyond his expectations came to Ramon.

He got scholarships from prestigious universities like the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Upsalla, Sweden where he acquired his Masters of Science degree in Veterinary Medicine and Cambridge University, England where he got his Masters of Science degree in Molecular Microbiology.

So, how did he do it?

“As long as you have a very strong faith in God, you really work hard and you have a good intention, anything is possible. That’s the message that I always tell to people,” Ramon shared.

His inspiring story of achieving his dreams despite life’s difficulties is the reason why he was awarded as the Huwarang OFW 2015 for the Individual category.

“The one thing that I really like about this award is because through this, I was able to inspire people especially the young,” Ramon said.

And that’s exactly what Ramon was doing until now. Since education is his advocacy, he used the cash prize he got to start a scholarship program in his hometown and help students achieve their dreams through education.

Ramon’s story then continues to inspire people not just here in the Philippines but also abroad. He was recently recognized as one of the inspirational students at the University of Nottingham, where he’s currently pursuing a PhD on Antimicrobial Resistance.

“I always believe that whatever your talent or intelligence, always think that it’s not a privilege but it’s a gift from God and you should use it for the good of mankind. For me, that is my mission or my role in this world,” Ramon shares.

Like Ramon, there are lots of OFWs who has inspiring stories.

What a beautiful story. Ramon is such an inspiring person through all his hard work and generosity. If the world had his core values, I believe we would have vastly different circumstances. Can’t wait to read about the next OFW.
