Sowing and Reaping Generously in Faith | Prayer Center

Sowing and Reaping GenerouslyThe Christians in Jerusalem were suffering from poverty and famine. The churches in Macedonia – Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea – though they were poor themselves, pleaded for the opportunity to give help.

The church in Corinth excelled in everything – Apostle Paul wanted them to also be known for their generosity. He hoped that news of the generosity of these Macedonian churches would encourage the Corinthian believers to show their love in a tangible way as well.

Thus he wrote them:

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” – 2 Corinthians 9: 6 – 8 NIV

The apostle likened giving to farming. A farmer who desires a bountiful harvest will generously scatter his seeds with expectation that in due time his labors will be rewarded.

In giving, money bestowed to aid the needy or to extend the influence of God’s work is seed sown. Resources invested in His work is not lost or wasted. The amount is not as important as their attitude.

Sowing and Reaping Generously in FaithGod wants them to give just as these churches did – out of dedication to Christ and love for fellow believers in need. Simply put, as followers of Christ, giving is a natural response of love.

Should they hesitate in doing so, Paul reminded them that giving is also a matter of faith. God is able to meet their needs. He will provide them with even more to give in His work. And He will reward in proportion to what is given, in this life or in heaven, or both.

If Christians are to follow in their Master’s steps, they must be known for their generosity to all – sinner and saints. Can a man lose by doing that which pleases God? He is able to make grace abound toward us and to abound in us.

Pastors, you are tasked to teach God’s people: sow generously.
