How Significant is a Father in One’s Life? Here are 5 of His Major Roles

significance of fathers in lives

Fathers are significant in the lives of their children especially during their formative years. According to childwelfare.gov, …children who have an involved father are more likely to be emotionally secure, be confident to explore their surroundings, and, as they grow older, have better social connections with peer.”

Here are 5 major roles of Fathers that has to be met in every household.

1. Spiritual Leader

In his book, Bringing up Boys, Dr. James Dobson says that fathers should teach their children the “fundamentals of their faith.”

Moreover, Ephesians 6:4 encourages bringing up the children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

As fathers follow the Word of God in raising their children, their household will reflect love and harmony, just as God intended it to be.

2. Head of the Family

The scripture is clear in Ephesians 5:21-25 that husbands or fathers should stand as the head of the family just as Christ is the head of the Church.

At the same time, Ephesians 5:28 reminds that “…husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.” While Ephesians 6:4 warned them not to exasperate their children.

Being the head of the family should never be abusive but should be driven by love.

3. Role Model for Respect

According to thespruce.com, “Children learn best by example.” Since fathers display headship in the house, they are the ones to whom the kids look up most of the time. If respect is being upheld by fathers through loving their wives and submitting to authorities, children will imitate this example and grow up as better individuals.

Proverbs 20:6 (ESV) says, “The righteous person lives a life of integrity; happy are his children who follow him!”

4. The Protector

In his book, Wild at Heart, John Eldredge says that “Aggression is part of the masculine design; we are hardwired for it. If we believe that man is made in the image of God, then we would do well to remember that ‘The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.’ (Exodus 15:3 NIV)

It is natural for men, like fathers, to be the protector of the family. It is the fathers’ role to make sure that his family is safe from harm not just physically but also mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

 5. The Provider

According to cbmw.org, “…The working man understands that a call to marriage is a call to provide. He will not quietly stand by while his family suffers.” This is a statement that further explains what Ephesians 5:28-29 meant when it called the husbands to not only love his wife as himself but to also feed her and take care of her just as Christ does the church.

One of the fathers’ primary roles is to provide for his family as a way of displaying his love. This is in accordance to the example that Jesus embodied.

These 5 major roles only show how significant fathers are in a family. Furthermore, a father finds his true identity as the head of the family once he grasps the role of His Heavenly Father.
