One of the greatest frustrations in life is to see potential die. Many people with great potential never realize what they have because they do not understand the seed of greatness that lies within them.
Great tragedy happens when a tree dies in a seed. Remember, in every seed there is a tree, in every tree there is a forest. In every baby boy there’s a man, in every little girl there’s a woman, in every nation a generation.
I remember a discovery I will never forget when I visited Korea a few years ago. In the midst of so many beautiful places, I was so blessed that our team went to a restaurant where I learned a lot. While most of my friends were eating, my eyes were glued to a beautiful, smooth, and perfectly-made green-colored toothpick. Yes, a toothpick—a toothpick with history!
A Korean friend who was with us at that time was so puzzled at why my attention was glued to a simple Korean toothpick. What he did not realize was I was so interested to know about its history. Being a pilgrim myself and not just a tourist, I love to learn a lot of things from places I visited, be it in a restaurant, public transportation, museums, or people, I really love to observe and learn. So I asked my Korean friend to give me information about the said toothpick. He stopped eating for a while and patiently told me its history.
A long time ago, Korea used sharp toothpicks made of wood. One day, there was an unemployed, disappointed man who entered a restaurant to observe what the people were doing after they eat. He found out that majority of the customers use toothpicks after their meal and leave them on their plates. He also discovered that waiters would normally gather all the leftover food from the plates without even sorting out the used toothpicks. At the end of the day, someone will pick up all the leftover food with the sharp toothpicks on it and feed it to the animals.
He was shocked to discover that many animals that were given those leftover food died due to the toothpicks puncturing their sensitive organs, like the heart. When this unemployed man learned this painful discovery, he went home and thought of things he can do about the situation.
Considering that the wooden toothpick can cause death to animals, he decided to make something safe. He decided to make a soluble toothpick—made from sweet potatoes! Yes, we call it kamote. When asked the reason behind his simple invention, the man simply said, “Because I love my country.”
This ordinary, frustrated, unemployed individual was discovered by the government of South Korea. He was requested to produce billions upon billions of soluble toothpicks to be used in different establishments. Today, that person, who used to be jobless, is now a rich man!
Think about this: everything in life is created with potential, just as a seed has a potential to become a forest. We are responsible for that seed of greatness stored within each of us. That man who created a soluble toothpick watered the seed of greatness within him and refused to be contented on his last accomplishment. His life could have been worse if he decided not to use his God-given talents and remain unemployed and sit in self pity.
You may be unemployed, full of disappointments, frustrations, unhappy at work, or maybe you may have come into this world as a result of a painful past. Your mother may have hated you because you reminded her of the man she hated. But because of the mere fact that you were born, God has a purpose for your life and placed a seed of potential for you to unleash.
You cannot change the past that you have been terminated. You cannot change the past that caused your disappointments, heartaches, and frustrations. Like that toothpick manufacturer, you can do something about your future. What is in front of you is far more important that what is behind you. Where you are going is far more important than where you have been. Stop looking back. Cultivate the seed of greatness God has placed within you. Maybe you thought that your dreams have died, but remember, God can resurrect your dead dreams! God has not given up on you. You have something to offer that nobody else has. There is a great wealth of potential in you! Remember, you are more that what you have done.
Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now unto him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”
Unleash that seed of greatness God planted within you, and you will discover that you will be able to do something great that you have never dreamed of! He who begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
