I shared last week that I took the challenge to start an “Unending Thank You Lord” journal. I would like to encourage others to do so. Why is that? Just as complaining magnifies our woes, thanksgiving magnifies our blessings. My own research of Scripture shows the benefits of being thankful. I realize keeping a journal, which I try to fill in daily, is one way of making thanksgiving a habit.
From God’s inspired word, (Psalm 69:30, “And shall magnify Him with thanksgiving”), I learned that thanksgiving magnifies the Lord. Have you heard that saying, “When your problem is big, your God is small. But when your God is big, your problem is small.” Thanking God for what is going right magnifies Him and the power of praise is released. Thanksgiving has a way of diffusing our trials, pushing away anxious thoughts (Philippians 4:6-7), aiding us to think clearly.
Thanksgiving is a command (1 Chronicles 16:8, “Give thanks to the Lord…”). Obedience ushers blessing.
And we are not only to thank God, but we are to overflow in it (Colossians 2:7). Keep thanking, in good days or bad. Jonah refers to giving thanks as a sacrifice (Jonah 2:9) because there will be times that it will not be easy. But grace and persistence are rewarded.
There is always, always, always something to be thankful for. As I place entry after entry in my journal, I marvel at how the Lord opens my eyes to what I would normally ignore! I highlight in bold letters those that refer to and honor the Giver of all things. Here are just some of those unusual entries:
