Hong Kong OFWs Benefit from Global Bayanihan Seminars for Families

Overseas Filipino workers in Hong Kong are now better equipped in dealing with the emotional and financial state of their families, thanks to the Global Bayanihan series of seminars held last May by Asian Center for Missions (ACM).

For two consecutive Sundays, more than 500 OFWs filled the International Christian Assembly church in Chai Wan, Hong Kong to listen to ACM Philippine Director Rev. Nathaniel Ramos talk about family issues faced by Filipinos working abroad.

Last May 16, the seminar entitled “Malayo Man, Malapit Din: Strengthening the Emotional Bond of OFW Families” explained how emotions are at the core of every family unit. The participants, after realizing how working abroad seriously affects a family’s emotional health, were able to understand their responses to being away from their own families.

At the “Pera at Pamilya: Finances and the Different Stages in Family Life” seminar last May 23, Rev. Ramos enlightened participants on the changing roles and responsibilities of each family member when it comes to earning, budgeting, and spending money. He also stressed the importance of financial literacy and how it can help avoid common pitfalls in managing family finances.

Rev. Ramos is a graduate of Bethel Bible College and has a master’s degree in counseling from Alliance Graduate School. For four years, he and his family lived in Tokyo where he started cross-cultural marriage counseling for Filipino-Japanese couples.

With his vision of empowering OFWs as a new breed of missionaries, Rev. Ramos aims to reach out to and bless Filipinos working abroad with helpful and relevant seminars. This forms part of Global Bayanihan, a campaign launched by ACM last year as a strategic response to Christian missions.

Asian Center for Missions is the cross-cultural missionary training arm of Christian Broadcasting Network Asia, producer of the daily inspirational show The 700 Club Asia.
